Tune In & Tune Up Event Cleans Valley's Polluting Vehicles

Non-profit Organization Gives $500 Vouchers for Smog-Related Repairs

(Visalia, Calif.) - Today, in a continuing effort to help improve the Valley's air quality, Valley CAN (Clean Air Now), in partnership with the Advanced Transportation Technology (ATT) Center of College of the Sequoias, hosted the 4th annual Tune In & Tune Up vehicle emission repair program. By offering smog checks and distributing coupons for up to $500 in smog related repairs, the event educated the public about the importance of smog maintenance and the significant impact high polluting vehicles have on Valley air quality. Today's event at College of the Sequoias also featured community booths and free food and refreshments for participants.

"High polluting vehicles are among the largest sources of air pollution in the San Joaquin Valley," said Paul Betancourt, president of Valley CAN. "We are proud to sponsor an event that, at no cost to the participant, allows anyone to test their vehicle's emissions and possibly qualify for a $500 coupon for certain vehicle repairs. This is an excellent public program that provides measurable results in reducing emissions from high polluting vehicles."

Tune In & Tune Up tested vehicle emissions by instructing owners to drive through a remote sensing device administered on-site by qualified specialists. Within seconds, a computer registered the vehicles' emissions levels and identified possible emissions problems. If necessary, cars proceeded to the on-site diagnostic station. Data collected from tests were analyzed and provided to the vehicle owner.

Tune In & Tune Up is a free event open to the public on a voluntary basis with no paperwork and no reporting. A local Gold Shield certified smog shop has partnered with Tune In & Tune Up to redeem Valley CAN's $500 emissions repair coupons.

"As an instructor in the automotive repair industry I understand the importance of being environmentally conscious, particularly in the San Joaquin Valley," said Roger Teschner, director of the ATT Center. "I enthusiastically support this program and feel it's a great tool to educate the public about the importance of maintaining their vehicles."

Additionally, California's Bureau of Automotive Repair (BAR) participated in today's event to administer their Consumer Assistance Program (CAP), which also offers $500 emission repair coupons to qualified participants. Certain vehicle owners qualified to receive $1,000 from BAR in exchange for their polluting vehicle.

Valley CAN is a 501 (c)(3) non-profit organization committed to improving air quality in communities throughout California's San Joaquin Valley. ATT is a Fresno City College-based program dedicated to providing the necessary infrastructure for well-trained technicians to support alternative fuel vehicles and emissions reduction systems.
